Don has been a personal injury attorney in Chicago for over 25 years and has been responsible for earning settlements and jury verdicts for injured individuals and their families (for Wrongful Death of a family member) primarily in the fields of Medical Malpractice and Nursing Home neglect and abuse.  He has obtained verdicts and settlements throughout the State of Illinois including Champaign, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Knox, Lake, Madison, McHenry, Peoria, Sangamon, Vermillion, Will and Winnebago Counties.

Mr. Sowers grew up in Chicago’s western suburbs and graduated from Glenbard West High School in Glen Ellyn, Illinois. He began his legal career defending represented physicians and hospitals, such as Northwestern University Medical Center, University of Chicago Hospitals and Clinics and The University of Illinois Hospitals and Clinics, in Medical Negligence cases. He also defended a major Pharmaceutical Manufacturer in lawsuits involving the drug Diethylstilbesterol (DES). After six (6) years as an Associate, Don was elected partner and was his firm’s Co-Chairman of the Medical Malpractice Department.

For the past 25 years, Don has utilized his expertise and compassion representing injured and their families in Medical Malpractice and Nursing Home Neglect lawsuits against Healthcare Providers, including Physicians, Nurses and Medical Centers. He is a member of Parente & Norem’s Medical Malpractice Team.

Notable Settlements and Jury Verdicts:

$9,000,000 Medical Malpractice Settlement on behalf of a newborn who suffered cerebral palsy due to the incompetence of the hospital’s nursing staff.

$6,000,000.00 Medical Malpractice Settlement for a baby girl and her mother after a hospitals nursing staff failed to identify fetal distress and failed to timely perform cesarean section after trial of labor after a prior cesarean section (VBAC) resulting in ruptured uterus of the mother and cerebral palsy to the baby.

$4,000,000 Medical Malpractice; Pretrial Settlement. For the failure of Hospital’s Orthopedic team, its nursing staff and residents and fellows to timely and promptly diagnose client’s compartment syndrome after a total knee arthroplasty (TKA). 

$2,950,000 Medical Malpractice; Presuit Settlement against a Hospital for failure timely diagnose and treat an impending stroke.

$2,250,000 Medical Malpractice Settlement. Failure to diagnose an impending Myocardial Infarction (heart attack) causing death.

$2,036,651 Medical Malpractice Jury Verdict against Infectious Disease Specialist for her misdiagnosing a degenerative disorder (Ochronosis) as a potentially lethal bacteria (Aspergillus fungus) causing a permanently fused knee. No offer to settle by the defendant before trial.

$2,000,000 Medical Malpractice; Pretrial Settlement with Obstetrician/Gynecologist failed to properly treat client after she had an abnormal Pap smear resulting in Cervical Cancer causing her death. Defendant paid the entire policy of insurance.

$1,045,000 (Will County) 2012 Medical Malpractice Settlement against Pediatric Critical Care Physician, who failed to timely terminate attempts at intubation of a 6-month-old girl causing her death. 

$1,039,790 Medical Malpractice; Jury Verdict against Urologist who improperly perforated bile duct during surgery. No offer to settle by the defendant before trial.

$1,000,000 Medical Malpractice Settlement against ENT who failed to diagnose tongue cancer resulting in patient’s wrongful death. Defendant paid entire policy of insurance.

$ 900,000 Medical Malpractice; Settlement during Trial against Internal Medicine Physician who failed to diagnose pneumonia and ARDS leading to death of 81-year-old client.
